A field note / buying well

Buy capacity with a reason.

A practical starting point for memory and storage.

How much RAM and SSD storage should I look for?

Our planning starting point is 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD for mixed everyday use. Consider 32 GB for sustained demanding work. Your actual software and files determine the final choice.

Start with a useful baseline.

For a mix of documents, browser tabs, study, calls and everyday work, our starting recommendation is 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD. This is a purchasing guideline, not a software minimum, benchmark or promise of performance.

Consider 32 GB of memory when you routinely run several demanding applications, virtual machines, larger creative projects or substantial development environments. Some workloads need more; others do well with less. Use your applications’ published recommendations and the size of your actual work.

Memory and storage solve different problems.

Memory is working space for active applications. Storage holds the operating system, applications and files. More storage will not solve a memory shortage, and more memory will not create room for your game library or video footage.

Estimate storage from what you already use, what you plan to install and the files you expect to create. Include local copies that need to remain available offline. A 1 TB SSD can be a practical planning target for larger projects or games, but you should calculate your own needs before paying for it.

Minimum requirements are not buying targets.

Microsoft lists 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage among Windows 11’s minimum system requirements. Those are installation requirements, not this guide’s recommended specification for comfortable mixed work. Microsoft also notes that applications and features can have additional requirements.

Check what can change later.

Look up the exact laptop model’s service documentation. Memory may be soldered, storage may have restrictions, and opening the device can require tools and technical skill. Do not assume an upgrade path from the brand name or appearance.

  • Which component is limiting your current computer?
  • What does your heaviest application recommend?
  • How much storage are you using now?
  • What can be upgraded in this exact configuration?
  • Would a better screen or keyboard be more useful than another specification tier?
