A field note / buying well

Refurbished. With the details.

Make condition, battery and terms inspectable.

What should I check before buying a refurbished laptop?

Get the exact configuration, condition description, battery evidence, included charger, warranty terms and return conditions. An unspecified detail is something to verify, not a benefit to assume.

Compare the actual machine.

A model family name is not enough. Obtain the exact processor, memory, storage, display and operating-system details. Ask about keyboard layout, charger inclusion and any visible or functional defects. Confirm that the listing describes the unit or condition grade you will actually receive.

Ask for battery evidence.

Windows can generate a report containing battery usage and estimated capacity. macOS reports battery cycle count, and Apple explains that cycle limits vary by model. Those records can help you assess condition, but they do not promise a particular number of hours in your workload.

Read the seller’s written battery policy alongside the report. Do not assume “refurbished” means a new battery. A battery replacement promise needs to be explicit and applicable to that product.

Read the terms that affect the purchase.

Refurbishment and warranty promises are seller-specific. For example, Apple’s Certified Refurbished programme describes functional testing and a one-year limited warranty. Its stated new-battery promise applies to refurbished iOS devices; it is not a universal promise about refurbished Macs.

For any seller, read the return window, condition rules, warranty exclusions, shipping costs and process for a defective item before paying. Compare the complete purchase with a new or clearance alternative. A headline discount does not settle value.

Keep this checklist beside the listing.

  • Exact model and configuration.
  • Written cosmetic and functional condition.
  • Battery report or documented battery policy.
  • Correct charger and included accessories.
  • Supported operating system and official eligibility.
  • Warranty provider, duration and exclusions.
  • Return window, charges and condition requirements.
  • Final total, including any shipping and applicable charges.

For used Windows machines, check official Windows 11 eligibility. Do not treat an installed operating system as evidence that the hardware is supported.
