A field note / buying well

Start with the software.

Choose the right platform before you choose the laptop.

How do I choose a laptop that works with my software?

List your essential applications and peripherals first. Check support for the exact operating system, processor architecture and configuration before comparing models.

Make the non-negotiable list.

Start with the applications you need, the files you share and the devices you connect. Include work or school requirements, specialist software, games, printers, docks and external displays. A laptop that misses one essential requirement is a poor fit, however attractive its specification.

Separate essentials from preferences. “Runs the accounting application required by my employer” is an essential. “Has a particular finish” is a preference. Resolve the essentials before comparing optional features.

Check the exact platform.

Windows, macOS and browser-focused systems are not interchangeable. Check each software publisher’s current support information. Ask whether the application needs a particular operating system, version, graphics capability or processor architecture. If you depend on a browser application, test its offline and peripheral requirements too.

Windows 11 on Arm can emulate x86 and x64 applications. That does not guarantee every program works, and hardware drivers need compatible Arm64 support. Check specialist peripherals and games with anti-cheat systems individually. A familiar Windows interface is not a substitute for that check.

A used Windows laptop needs a second check.

Standard support for Windows 10 Home and Pro ended on October 14, 2025. For a used machine, verify official Windows 11 eligibility against Microsoft’s requirements and the manufacturer’s documentation. The presence of an installed copy of Windows 11 does not, by itself, establish eligibility.

What to take into your shortlist.

  • The exact names and versions of your essential applications.
  • Required operating system and processor compatibility.
  • Peripheral model numbers and driver support.
  • Work or school device-management requirements, where applicable.
  • A realistic way to return a purchase if an agreed requirement is not met.

Once those conditions are clear, compare memory, storage, screen, keyboard and portability. The specification builder helps organize that next step.
